Opportunities in biotechnology at Eli Lilly At Lilly, our work saves lives and affects the quality of life for people around the globe. Lilly has been a leader in biopharmaceuticals since 1922, when the company began making insulin. Today, Lilly is one of the largest biotechnology companies in the world as measured by total sales. Approximately 30 percent of our total portfolio is biotech medicines in several therapeutic categories. Biotech medicines also represented one-third of the company's new product pipeline at the end of 2008. Our Kinsale site employs approximately 450 people, is a premier API manufacturing facility and a strategic global new product introduction site within the Lilly network . We are now positioned to become a centre of excellence in biopharmaceutical manufacturing technology with construction well underway of a 400 million Euro facility. This multi-product facility is founded on Lilly's platform-based approach to process development and bio manufacturing. It will include substantial cell culture capacity and an associated downstream processing area to produce final API. In addition, significant bioprocess development capabilities are also being established. This facility will be the preferred launch site for Lilly's strong late stage biotech product pipeline.
