Women's healthcare here in Ireland and around the world is changing rapidly. Now, in the year 2000 the number of women aged 55 years or over has grown faster than any other age group. This postmenopausal group will require more strength and endurance than ever before. They will not always be free from pressure, just because their families are reared. They may have to take on new roles, for example, as carers of grandchildren or elderly relatives. In all of these roles and as a result of the fact that women traditionally undertake some 82% of visits to General Practitioners in Ireland (whether directly or coincidentally with their children or those for whom they are caring for) they will have a profound influence on physicians' awareness of postmenopausal health concerns. At Eli Lilly, we believe that women's strength is a powerful thing. The more we recognise and respond to women's health needs, the more we will all benefit. This includes women, healthcare providers, industry, government and support groups alike. Although Eli Lilly is recognised as a worldwide leader in the pharmaceutical industry, you may not be familiar with our long standing commitment to women's health. Now more than ever, we are strengthening our commitment. At the same time, we believe that preserving women's health begins with knowledge - the most powerful medicine of all. This is why we have established the Lilly Centre for Women's Health - a worldwide organisation dedicated to research, education and advocacy. Through the Lilly Centre for Women's Health, some of the key issues we will focus on are:
